The research that I did for the Essay about market research included looking up the latest viewing figures for the lead programs on the television.  The reason why this research is important is that if you have thought of a new idea for a television show you can look at these figures.  A useful secondary source to find out about UK viewing figures is barb.co.uk which is updated weekly so it has the most up to date resource for viewing figures in the UK.  It is also a crime if you falsify your research.

Due to the amount of popularity that has surrounded the release of Avatar I believe that Avatar will be the most likely to win the Oscar for the Best Motion Picture of the year.  However in my opinion the winner will be between District 9 or The Hurt Locker.  The reason why Avatar is most likely to win would be because of 1) it’s HUGE profit in the Box Office and 2) All of the hype that there is about the film.  The reason why I believe that District 9 or The Hurt Locker should win the best motion picture as both of them have a great story lines and they inform the audience of issues that are relevent and exist in society.

Piracy devisates the industry since when bootlegged copies of Films, Television Shows and Music.  The main reason why it is frowned upon apart from being illegal is because in the case of films it takes away some of the money that is made from the box office as pirate copies are normally avalible soon after afilm hits the box office.  I feel that the pirate copies of films takes away half of the reason that we go to the cinema in the first place as well as having a lower sound quality to what the film would have at the cinema.  Films and Television programes are now easily avalible to watch on the internet through a number of websites located on the internet.

In my opinion the best films of 09 that i saw would have had to be “Harry Potter and the half blood prince” as it is a good story line although the adaptation of it from the book could have been done differently as there was some scenes from the book that are important for the audience to know for what happens in the Deathly Hallows.  The film has an engaging plot line and the part that i knew was going to happen still surprised me.

Another one of the best films of 2009 that I saw was the new Star Trek film which was an extremely entertaining film despite me not having watched it when the series was on.

Horror is a well-known film genre which has changed over times and become more visual based over the more recent years.  A good example of this “evolution” of the genre is with the original and the remake of the texas chainsaw massacre, this is because the original was more psychological and let your brain think about what was happening while the remake has excess amounts of visual gore present on-screen.

The general population is mixed with their reactions towards the horror genre, while some don’t like horror film’s as they tend to scare easily or don’t like lots of graphical images others like them as they provide to be entertaining.  I personal like the horror genre as it can have a wide variety of different scenarios which can entertain the masses while also having intriguing plotlines.  There are also various film’s, or a series of film’s that have a substantial fan base for them.  Some of the most universally recognised series of horror films can include: Halloween, Friday the 13th and nightmare on Elm Street.

“People who are fans of a fiction genre, or of a subgenre, who have their own clubs, conventions and amateur magazines (fanzines), dating back (in some cases) to the early 1930s. Some of these are overlapping. Star Trek fandom, for example, started in science fiction fandom and eventually became a separate fandom on its own.”* Fandom is people who have created a cult like following of a Television programme, Film, book or comic.  The most well known of these are “Trekkies”**, or fans of Star Trek.  Fans also create their own works that are based on that which they are fans of.  This can include fan-fiction (Fan made stories), fan made films and trailers as well as fan made websodies (These are episode made for the internet).  Some television shows have started through the use of websodies i.e. Sanctuary.

Trailers are used to promote a film but do they give too much away?  While trailers are useful for film to be known by a wider audience they could give away too much of the main plotline of the film.  These trailer’s are used to show the “best” bits of the film while still keeping the audience in the dark but, does this actually happen?  Trailers can also misinterpret by the audience and be mistaken as a different genre of film than they actually are.  They can be useful to show the audience key information like famous actors and the director as well as possible release date.

One of the reasons why these types of films are so popular is because on a subconscious level we know that it could actually happen to us.  Another reason why we find these films so appealing is because we find them as a replacement that will substitute the vicious sports of ancient times.  I feel that these films are a crucial way in which we can release our ideas and feelings as to what will eventually happen to us and why we are thinking that way.
